General infomation on war genre

The normal context of war movies are mostly captured solders escaping from prisoner of war camps, tales of courage in war, combat and are mostly land based movies for example ‘all quiet on the Weston front’. This movie does not only show the world war as it is but also shows it from a German solders point of view. Although in some cases the context has changed to comedy. This was done in Charlie Chaplin’s ‘The Great Dictator’ in witch he plays the character of a Jewish barber who gats mistaken for Hitler. The normall music and sound track that they have is intense, or they do not have any music and just have the sound of the war. E.g mortar rounds, sounds of gunfire. This is what is normally used in war films. The normall story that was used in war film genre was mostly famous wars like the world wars and vietnam. Although mostly nowadys they are either modern warfare, futer warfare or misssions gone wrong and lost from his platoon and fight his way to freedom. So the plot also will follow famous wars or resuce missions.
The characters used are mostly soilders on resuce missions, lost or just fighting in the war. R.A.F and navy in the fight and sometimes being shot down and lost and how they coped. Other characters that would be seen are parliament people organising the war, also just normall people who would be seen in the effects of the war and of course in most world wr 2 films the german army and hitler.
The camera shots that are used in this type of films are normally dramatic, close up, camera shake to show explosions, long shots over the battlefield and medim shots of soilders fighting. Examples of this being used is the beach scene in saving private ryan is long shot over the beach in some parts.
The audience that is mostly drawn to war movies I would say are boys and men as this sort of violence that would appeal more to men than what it would to women. Also the age of target audience would attract kids in there teenage years and adults in there 30’s upwards would enjoy and like them.

War Film genre history and brief background on most war films.

Background and history:
The first war movie was a 90 second propagandist effort called Tearing down the Spanish flag (1898).
Most directors steered away from war films because of the huge money needed to make them
At world war one war films came back and were more popular.
Post world war two was when most war films were made.
Many now are based on modern war and mostly 18.

Films:
Although the war genre first started in 1898 with a 90 second film called tearing down the Spanish flag, I am only going to look at the films post world war 2 as that is when most of these films became popular. Most films that i have found are normall based on true storys. these include black hawk down and to hell and bak. this film is based on a novel written by a soilder and in the movie he played himself. so most movies are based on true events, novels and history.
